Google Chrome For Mac

Web Geek's Guide to Google ChromeThe wait is over.  Google Chrome for Mac is now available in beta. It’s still missing a few features that are in the Windows version (like support for extensions), but the browser is lickety-split and more-or-less stable.

I’ve been holding off really using Chrome until now. But I’m ready for something faster and less crashy than Firefox. (Crosses fingers).

Right from the gate, you can apply themes from a gallery to trick out your browser. Are you more into gnomes (”Infected Mushroom” theme) or blurred out images of the Brooklyn Bridge (”Donna Karan” theme)? Yeah, I’m gonna stick to the minimal default look. Although one thing that takes getting used to is the almost complete lack of toolbar real estate. Where are all the buttons?

One little feature I like, which Chrome borrows from Safari, is that when you click on a new tab, it shows you a gallery of recent sites you’ve visited. And you can drag a tab off to detach it as a separate window. Handy.

Update: Google also released Chrome for Linux and Extensions for Windows and Linux (in beta). More details on the Google Blog.

Top 10 Yahoo! Internet Searches of 2009

(CBS) One of the most telling ways to assess our national interest in economics, politics, and entertainment is to analyze the top web searches of the year. So what are the most searched topics on Yahoo! this year?
Heather Cabot, Yahoo! Web life editor, shared on "The Early Show" what the hottest web topics were in 2009 and what they say about Americans and our national consciousness.

TOP TEN OVERALL YAHOO! SEARCHES FOR 2009
1. Michael Jackson
2. Twilight
3. WWE
4. Megan Fox
5. Britney Spears
6. Naruto (Japanese Anime)
7. American Idol
8. Kim Kardashian
9. NASCAR
10. Runescape

So what overall does this list tells us?
Cabot said people mainly use the Internet as an escape.
"When people do searches on the Web it means that they have 10 minutes to let their heads take a break from the daily grind. Or they have a half an hour away from the kids," she said. "People use the Internet to learn more about entertainment gossip. It's their way to get instant gratification on whatever topic they want to check into further."

In 2009, Cabot said the Web was an integral part of the news cycle as people rushed online to get updates about topics as diverse as the economy, foreclosures, Michael Jackson, unemployment, "Jon & Kate Plus 8," and health care.

As the recession entered its second year, she said old-fashioned thrift become a necessity (the number one economic search was coupons), as those lucky enough to have jobs and homes scrimped, saved, and "stay-cationed."
"People rolled up their sleeves and dug in to shift from crisis to survival, and went online to make sense of the seeming chaos around them by tracking stories -- and welcoming distractions -- throughout the year," she said."

Compelete Coverage of Michael Jackson's Death

The King of Pop knocked the pop princess off her Search perch in 2009, Cabot noted. Britney Spears -- who dominated Yahoo!'s Top 10 Overall Searches for the past four years -- dropped from the No. 1 position to No. 5 this year, behind Michael Jackson, the book and film series "Twilight," World Wrestling Entertainment, and rising star Megan Fox. Michael Jackson's death broke many records on Yahoo!, Cabot said. His memorial was the single most streamed event in Yahoo!'s history, with five million total streams, she said. The popularity of "Twilight" also hit an all-time high in 2009 -- with every "Twilight" book, DVD, and soundtrack release; and with every piece of cast gossip, massive numbers of "Twilighters" went online to search for more.

In 2009, Michael Jackson's sudden death prompted an online search sensation. His life and death became a phenomenon that rivals Elvis Mania, Cabot said. People were all over the Web to reminisce, watch the funeral and buy his music. she said. Cabot added that Jackson's funeral was the most streamed video of all time. Other notes of interest on the top 10 list is that Megan Fox continues to fascinate and titillate.

Cabot added that no matter how many times people say that reality TV is dead, it's still on, and how. Kim Kardashian, a celebrity known mainly for her reality TV show, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," is No. 8.

TOP 10 YAHOO! MOBILE PHONE SEARCHES
1. Megan Fox
2. Mobile Games
3. Michael Jackson
4. Movies (mostly checking addresses and show times)

"More than ever before, people use mobile devices to discover new things, stay connected and stay informed while on the go," Cabot said. "What's worth noticing here is the difference between what we look for on our computers versus what we look at on our phones. There is still a certain amount of escapism there, Megan Fox is still number one, although the search on the mobile network is dominated by picture downloads, rather than information."

Also worth noticing on the top four, is that people are looking for mobile games to kill time when they are out and about, and movie showtimes. Cabot said people use their cell phone Internet search engines for more practical purposes than their computer Internet.

TOP TEN YAHOO! ECONOMIC SEARCHES
1. Coupons

2. Unemployment
3. Stimulus Plan
4. Cash for Clunkers

Coupons were by far the No. 1 search on the web, showing that people at home are still interested in saving any way they can. The second most important economic concern for people if you judge by the search is unemployment. Many Americans, Cabot said, will not feel this economically dark period will not be over until the job market recovers. The "Stimulus Plan" and "Cash for Clunkers" are also big searches for people as they attempt to look into what the government is doing to help them, Cabot said.

TOP TEN YAHOO! OBAMA SEARCHES
1. Obama Inauguration
2. Obama Biography
3. Obama Speech

Our current president continues to fascinate Internet users. In fact, Cabot said, until the Michael Jackson funeral, the Obama inauguration was the number one streamed video on the web. Cabot added, "People want to know who he is, what he has said, and where he comes from."

Google Chrome is an open source browser based on Webkit and powered by Google Gears. It was accidentally announced prematurely on September 1, 2008 and slated for release the following day. It premiers originally on Windows only, with Mac and Linux versions to come later.

Features include:
  • Tabbed browsing where each tab gets its own process, leading to faster and more stable browsing.
  • If one tab crashes, the whole browser doesn’t go down with it
  • A distinct user interface that places tabs on top of the browser window instead of right below the address bar
  • An “incognito” mode that lets you browse the web in complete privacy because it doesn’t record any of your activity
  • A new JavaScript engine built from the ground up for speed
  • Malware and phishing lists that automatically update themselves and warn you of bad websites
  • A default homepage that displays your most commonly used sites and other personalized information

Google chose to introduce Chrome to the media via a comic book written by Scott McLeod.

JavaScript Performance Rundown

Posted by Unknown 1 komentar
Agenliga Sebagai Agen Bola Online Untuk Euro 2012 | Fairbet88.com dukung fairplay EURO 2012 | 988BET Agen Bola Untuk Prediksi Piala Eropa 2012

A new JavaScript Engine has hit the pavement running: The new V8 engine (powering the brand-new Google Chrome browser).
There are now a ton of JavaScript engines on the market (even when you only look at the ones being actively used in browsers):
  1. JavaScriptCore: The engine that powers Safari/WebKit (up until Safari 3.1).
  2. SquirrelFish: The engine used by Safari 4.0. Note: The latest WebKit nightly for Windows crashes on Dromaeo, so it's passed for now.
  3. V8 : The engine used by Google Chrome.
  4. SpiderMonkey: The engine that powers Firefox (up to, and including, Firefox 3.0).
  5. TraceMonkey: The engine that will power Firefox 3.1 and newer (currently in nightlies, but disabled by default).
  6. Futhark: The engine used in Opera 9.5 and newer.
  7. IE JScript: The engine that powers Internet Explorer.
There have, already, been a number of performance tests run on the above browsers - and a few of those runs have also included the new Chrome browser. It's important to look at these numbers and try and gain some perspective on what the tests are testing and how those numbers relate to actual web page performance.
We have three test suites that we're going to look at:
  • SunSpider: The popular JavaScript performance test suite released by the WebKit team. Tests only the performance of the JavaScript engine (no rendering or DOM manipulation). Has a wide variety of tests (objects, function calls, math, recursion, etc.)
  • V8 Benchmark: A benchmark built by the V8 team, only tests JavaScript performance - with a heavy emphasis on testing the performance of recursion.
  • Dromaeo: A test suite built by Mozilla, tests JavaScript, DOM, and JavaScript Library performance. Has a wide variety of tests, with the majority of time spent analyzing DOM and JavaScript library performance.

SunSpider

Let's start by taking a look at some results from WebKit's SunSpider test (which covers a wide selection of pure-JavaScript functionality). Here is the break down:

We see a fairly steady curve, heading down to Chrome (ignoring the Internet Explorer outliers). Chrome is definitely the fastest in these results - although the results from the new TraceMonkey engine aren't included.
Brendan Eich pulled together a comparison, last night, of the latest TraceMonkey code against V8.

We already see TraceMonkey (under development for about 2 months) performing better than V8 (under development for about 2 years).
The biggest thing holding TraceMonkey back, at this point, is its recursion tracing. As of this moment no tracing is done across recursive calls (which puts TraceMonkey as being about 10x slower than V8 at recursion). Once recursion tracing lands for Firefox 3.1 I'll be sure to revisit the above results.

Google Chrome Benchmark

The Chrome team released their own benchmark for analyzing JavaScript performance. This includes a few new tests (different from the SunSpider ones) and is very recursion-heavy:

We can see Chrome decimating that other browsers on these tests. Its debatable as to how representative these tests are of real browser performance, considering the hyper-specific focus on minute features within JavaScript.
Note TraceMonkey performing poorly: It's unable to benefit from any of the tracing due to the lack of recursion tracing (as explained above).

Dromaeo with DOM

Finally, let's take a more holistic look at JavaScript performance. I've been working on the Dromaeo test suite, adding in a ton of new DOM and JavaScript library tests. This assortment provides a much stronger look at how browsers might perform under a normal web browsing situation.
Considering that most web pages are being held back by the performance of the DOM (think table sorters and the like) and not, necessarily, the performance of JavaScript (games, graphics) it's important to look at these particular details for extended analysis.
The results of a run against the JavaScript, DOM, and library tests (thanks to Asa Dotzler for helping me run the tests):

(No results for IE were provided as the browser crashes when running the tests, unfortunately - also I had trouble getting the WebKit nightlies, with Squirrelfish, to run on Windows, see bug 20626.)
We see a very different picture here. WebKit-based engines are absolutely ahead - but Chrome is lagging behind the latest release of Safari. And while there is a small speed improvement while using TraceMonkey, over regular Firefox, the full potential won't be unlocked until tracing can be performed over DOM structures (which it is currently incapable of - may not be ready until Firefox 3.2 or so).
One thing is clear, though: The game of JavaScript Performance leapfrog is continuing. With another JavaScript engine in the mix that rapid iteration will only have to increase - which is simply fantastic for end users and application developers.
